‘Meandering’ is the coming together of 3 artists (Louise Nade, Rachel Carroll and Katrina Beissel) who have flowed with the twists and turns of life to arrive at this point in time. LIfe’s journey is never linear and the interest often lies in the deviations, time taken to wander and wonder, to see, understand and find meaning. The title infers layers of meaning. ‘Meandering: (The act of) following a winding course’ points to the art-making process: of collecting materials, scoping sites, searching for references, interlacing fibres, motioning paint across canvas.
‘Meandering’ also describes the subject matter: twisted branches, winding roads, snaking rivers, rambling paths, woven vessels. These objects of the natural and man-made world are imperfect, flawed and deviating. It is within the parentheses of quiet time, carved out for being and creating, that we realise the process and the product merge into the one act of creation. And we embrace the perfect imperfection of the work and our journeys, the ‘unstraightforwardness’ of a life well-lived.
