"I meant to be walking the Larapinta Trail but I broke my toe before we left. I brought my watercolours and painted for six days while the others walked. I was painting as a personal diary and to pass the time, not thinking of exhibiting. When I returned and saw the sketches as a group I felt that together they tell a story. I had never been to Tjoritja (West MacDonnell Ranges) in the Northern Teritory. These plein air works are innocent first impressions as i grapple with the colour, light, plants and forms in the landscape."
ABOUT TANYA BAILY
I am an Australian artist working exclusively in transparent watercolour and mostly on a large scale. I explore the diverse applications of watercolour in a painting context, where historically the medium has been underrepresented.
Drawn to the wildness and diversity of the Australian landscape, I spend time outdoors working en plein air and paint finished works in my studio in Sydney.
I exhibit in Sydney and internationally, and teach watercolour painting at NAS, Artest and WWAS.
I take commissions for paintings, including portraits and architecture.
Significant prizes include winner of FLOW National Watercolour Prize at Wollongong Art Gallery 2019 and winner of the Rex Irwin Prize for Mart COFA 2010. I have been a frequent finalist in major National art prizes.
I am a member of the Australian Watercolour Institute.
I was educated at Oxford university, Chelsea School of Art, and Completed a Master of Art at COFA in Sydney.
